Beauty 101: Summer Skin Still Needs Hydration

Are you one of those people that thinks "my skin gets oily in the summer so I don't need to hydrate", well I have news for you! Your skin needs constant hydration just like your body. Read more about some of my go-to serums/hydration skin care products.

Hydration is key!

Now first off, apologies for the millions years between posts. As some of you may already know, I was living/studying across the pond in beautiful Ireland. I was hoping to keep my regular posting schedule, however this silly thing called class got in the way ;). I am not going to promise regular posting just yet, I will slowly start back in and hopefully be back to regular posts in the next few weeks! It may seem silly, but I have missed you guys & posting!

Now back to the post!

Moisture loss in our skin usually happens when the humidity levels are lowered during winter, this causes dry patches, flaking and and overall dull complexion to the skin. Now one thing to get straight is the fact that it is WATER that your skin is missing, not the OIL (unless you are that special type of person missing lipids, but that is a post for another day!).

Now most of us think that just ends with the winter weather and that we can go on our marry way and skip essential hydration. I have met people that even forego wearing creams all together in the summer! This can actually cause your skin to become more oily as the oil will try to compensate for the lack of water in your skin.

With specifically formulated products your skin will be better able to retain moisture. One of the key types of ingredients that you will see is Hyaluronic Acid; this bad boy can hold a whole bunch of water and ensure that your skin feels moisturized throughout the day. Most companies are using this ingredient (or a derivative) in their products to help with the dry skin.

Anyways...this isn't science class, lets start talking about some of these magical little babies!!

*NOTE* I don't have pricing information right now, but I do know that these products are all under the $50 marker and can be found in local Shoppers Drug Mart locations (the Clarins would only be in select SDM locations or department stores).

How do I know my Hydration Level?

A really neat tool that every Shoppers Drug Mart location has is a hydration/moisture checker. This little machine can quickly scan your face to see how dehydrated your skin actually is. I think that this is a tool that a lot of people don't know about, and you can get checked for free at your local shop! Just go in and ask the girls in cosmetics to help you out and give you a mini skin consultation free of charge.

1. Bioderma Hydrobio Serum

Now this is like the little serum that never ends. I swear everytime I thought this was going to be done, I got another week out of it! You really need the tiniest bit. I find from the texture this would be suited for all skintypes and has a very cooling texture. I can honestly say that this is one of my favourite of the serums that I have used for hydration.

Now with a serum, you would layer this under your moisturizer. That is something that I love about serums, it allows you to treat the hydration issues, and then you can use your matte face cream, or anti-aging cream without any issues!

2. NeoStrata Moisture Infusion Serum

As much as I love NeoStrata products, this one was a bit of a flop for me. The packaging was boring, and the texture left my skin still feeling tight and as if I needed to use a million pumps just to feel like it was doing anything. Again this is a personal opinion, maybe for someone with less dehydrated skin, this might be fine. I would look at some of the other options on this list before hand though.

3. Vichy Aqualia Thermal Serum

The newly revamped Aqualia Thermal serum has a beautiful texture. I found it to be super light and absorbed really well into the skin. I wouldn't recommend for those that have a very tight feeling skin that wants a lot of hydration, I would say those that are only mildly dehydrated should try this option. I still keep it at my number two spot as it worked nicely and the packaging is really nice (I am a sucker for a pretty bottle).

4. Avene Hydrance Optimale Serum

This would have to be a close tie for second with the Vichy, the Avene product worked a bit better for my skin. It is a thicker texture, similar to the Bioderma, and it absorbs quickly into the skin. One thing to keep in mind, it is a bit less in price than the Bioderma but only has 30 ml and the other has 40ml. I found that to really make a difference.

5. Clarins HydraQuench Cream-Gel

I personally have used the Normal to Combo and the Dry skin formulations. I personally prefer the dry skin over the cream-gel, but they are both very nice products. I would pick this over the Vichy based on the texture being a little more luxurious and I found it absorbed better into my skin.

6. Vichy Aqualia Thermal Light

This is a good option, I would say that it layers very well over the Aqualia serum. If you are going with that serum, then you can try this cream with it as they worked well together. If you are just looking for a cream, test out the texture of the Clarins and this, also smell the product as the Clarins has a bit more of a scent. Both products work very well, so it will come down to scent and texture preference.

Conclusion

Hydration is really important, and I missed blogging! I hope that this information helps you guys out and I look forward to coming back to regular blogging!

Until next time,
